Name of the project: Preventing and mitigating farmed bivalve diseases

Context: European shellfish industry enjoys a quite privileged ranking at the world level. The social impact of this sector (8000 companies, mostly micro enterprises) is undeniable. The European production is not very diversified and mostly relies on mussels, oysters and scallops, which are produced at an industrial level. Over the recent years, this sector has grown more slowly than others, because of its dependency towards the environmental quality and the emergence of diseases, which affect the sustainability of the production.

General mission: Increasing the sustainability and competitiveness of the European shellfish industry.

Objectives: To achieve this mission, the project will aim at improving the understanding of the diseases and developing practical solutions to prevent, control and manage them.

Added value of VIVALDI:

What do scientists already know?

-          Researchers are already able to detect bacteria, viruses or parasites in shells;

-          A number of defence mechanisms developed by the shells  to fight against the diseases have been identified and described;

-          Researchers can already select disease-resistant animals.

What still needs to be investigated?

-          The diversity of the pathogens;

-          Where they are and what they do when they are not in the shells;

-          The influence of the environment on the impact that a microbe has on a shell (why do some shells die and some don’t, facing the same microbe)

Tools to be developed :

-          Early detection instruments (biosensors);

-          Indicators on shells’ health condition;

-          Predicting models on the influence of the environment on the development of diseases.
