Public research institution, Ireland

The Marine Institute is the national Irish agency responsible for marine research and innovation. It is unique in Europe, as it has 3 functions, not normally associated with a single agency, namely that of:

  • A Regulatory Agency: providing scientific advice, data and assessments in support of national legislation, EU Policies (e.g. Common Fisheries Policy) and Directives (e.g. Marine Strategy Framework Directive, Shellfish Waters Directive, etc.);
  • A Research Performer (RPO): carrying out applied and experimental development research;
  • A Research Funding Organisation (RFO): managing and implementing a national, competitive marine research funding programme.
