Galway statement on Atlantic Ocean Cooperation, EU-Canada-USA Research Alliance

The Galway Statement on Atlantic Ocean Cooperation was signed on 24 May 2013 by the European Union, Canada and the United States.

This statement establishes a formal Atlantic Ocean Research Cooperation between the CA, EU and the US and partner countries that builds on existing initiatives and programmes to:

  • improve ocean health and stewardship
  • promote sustainable management of resources
  • improve ecosystem assessments and forecasts and deeper understanding of vulnerabilities and risks, including climate change
  • generate new tools to increase resilience, conserve rich biodiversity, manage risk and determine social, environmental, and economic priorities
  • promote our citizens’ understanding of the value of the Atlantic by promoting oceans literacy

Joint Programming Initiative Healthy and Productive Seas and Oceans (JPI Oceans)

This initiative was established in 2011 as a coordinating and integrating strategic platform, open to all EU Member States and Associated Countries who invest in marine and maritime research. JPI Oceans covers all European sea basins with 21 participating countries which provide a long-term integrated approach to marine and maritime research and technology development in Europe. In the near future, the VIVALDI partners will investigate possible synergies between the VIVALDI project and this initiative.

French-German cooperation programme studying the impact of environmental changes on pathogen organisms in coastal ecosystems.

Closed projects

BIVALIFE

The two core objectives of BIVALIFE were:
    to provide innovative knowledge related to pathogens infecting oysters and mussels and
    to develop practical approaches for the control of infectious diseases and resulting mortality outbreaks these pathogens induce.

EUROSHELL

This project aimed at reducing the gap between sciences and European shellfish farmers, and better understand their approach to the problems they are facing.
